I hate the packaging so much that if I get this release I’m planning on ordering those clear criterion cases off their website and either finding criterion cover art someone made or making my own and printing it out on glossy paper and just using that as the case for it just so it would actually look good on my shelf. I just don’t understand why they thought the packaging was a good idea.

Is this the theatrical cut or the unrated cut?

and of course the price is outrageous

You talk about grain like it’s a bad thing.. a lot of us love film grain!

Thanks for this review, but I think you underestimate the 1973 theatrical release. It's a satisfying western and an elegantly made film. The preview cuts are raw and unfinished and in need of editing, and fascinating for all that. The 50th Anniversary Release amplified the core story be reinstating cut scenes that are judiciously edited. I could watch it all day. Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid is brilliant in all its versions. Be sure to crank the sound ALL THE WAY UP.

Looking forward to picking this up when it goes on sale (prices in Canada are ridiculous). I'm glad that Criterion opted to spread out the love onto 2 discs apiece considering they're notorious for compression. More Peckinpah on 4K please.

Great review bro! Just ordered my copy of Hard Target on 4k! I actually got to meet actress Yancy Butler at a convention I went to last month! She was so nice. Like a genuine nice person. Anyway sorry I digress, just wanted to comment and say nice review on a movie we all hold in high regard. :)

The remote isn’t ideal. The backlight button really should be on the side of the remote (like the old HTM remotes) so it is easy to find in the dark )

Saw them in '82,brilliant live,pity byrne refused fortunes to play coechella etc,luckily demme recorded it after watching the show.

I wouldn’t say Cybills stardom declined. She went on to do many movies and had her own show Cybill. I was in my 20’s when Moonlighting first aired. There were so many rumors about the stars….they were good friends in the beginning. You need to do better research and look at out takes from the show…they are on UA-cam too…..interviews with them together…one behind the scenes interview shows them as friends….….and photos taken of them attending awards together. They both even admit they had an attraction to each other…Curtis Armstrong says in his book how Bruce told him about a fling with his costar on the show. It wasn’t until season 3 things started to go downhill when Cybill became pregnant and Bruce wanted to film movies. But I agree with you…the ending sucked big time.

I side with if the original version wasn't available anywhere, then I see nothing wrong with it. I've been looking for the original theatrical release versions of Star Wars episodes 4-6 without the horrible added CGI scenes, especially Return of the Jedi. Lucas never released it at all. Also hoping the have The Last of the Mohicans theatrical cut because all that's available now is the Definitive Director's Cut which Michael Mann cuts out almost all the iconic scenes that made the movie amazing. I've bought it on VHS and Blu-ray as the Definitive Director's Cut just to have it. I no longer have a video player to play the VHS though. I'm hoping to upgrade.

Mulholland Drive is still my favorite of Lynch’s films, but this is a close second followed by Fire Walk With Me. I may have to pick this up.

Did you own the Criterion blu ray version? It came in a very slim digital-case, but the 4K looks a little thicker? Can you verify?

I was on the fence since I already own the excellent blu-ray. Going to have to pick this up when it goes on sale. Great review Andrew! Definitely the seminal film in David Lynch's film trajectory. Thanks to Dune, this is the one that permanently set him on the path of "the art life".

How do you feel about the pulp fiction transfer?

Great movie. Picture looks too smooth and lacking in detail. Colour is an improvement. No extras either. Just hope the UK version doesn't use the same master.

The UK 4k steelbook by Studio Canal is out in July and is a 3 disc set. There are bonus features but the artwork on the case is not as nice as the US edition IMO.

I find it irritating that we now have a new version when I already bought the former version. Begs the question: why wasn't the transfer "done right" the first time? I don't think I'll be "upgrading."
